Seares, Frederick

Born May 17, 1873, in Cassopolis. Mich.: died July 20, 1964, in Honolulu. American astronomer. Member of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

Seares and his students determined precise photographic and photovisual stellar magnitudes for a number of stars of the second to 20th stellar magnitudes in the region of the north celestial pole. At the first assembly of the International Astronomical Union in 1922, these magnitudes were adopted as an international standard. Seares also determined the stellar magnitudes of 110,000 stars. A number of his works deal with the structure of the Galaxy. He proposed a convenient method for the numerical solution of equations of stellar statistics.
