Seattle (b. Sealth) (?1788–1866) Suquamish/Duwamish chief; born near present-day Seattle, Wash. An active warrior as a youth, he later converted to Christianity and advocated peace with the whites. For this, the city of Seattle was named in his honor in 1852. |
