| A BUMPER STICKER PROCLAIMING the Second Coming of Christ reminds the reader to look busy. Thus, any future expectation of a second coming of Christ is a deviation from the truth of primitive Christianity and, as such, a myth: "The least inadequate myth of the goal of history is that which moulds itself upon the great divine event of the past, known in its concrete actuality, and depicts its final issue in a form which brings time to an end and places man in eternity--the second Coming of the Lord, the Last Judgment" (Dodd 1936: 240). In the case of BJM, it's simply the sad spectacle of a drunken, doped- up, hateful idiot named Anton Newcombe, literally thinking he's the second coming of Christ only to realize that people aren't fond of prophets who physically and mentally abuse their followers. |
