Segauli, Treaty of

    0.01 sec.
Segauli, Treaty of

(in Russian, Segauli Treaty of 1916), an agreement forced upon Nepal by the British East India Company as a result of Nepal’s defeat in the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814–16. The treaty, which confirmed Nepal’s semicolonial dependence on Great Britain, was signed on Dec. 2, 1816, in Segauli, an Indian village near the Nepalese border. Nepal was forced to give up territory located between the Kali and Rapti Rivers, Nepalese foreign policy was put under British control, and a British resident was admitted into Katmandu.
