Segel’, Iakov Aleksandrovich 

Born Mar. 10, 1923, in Rostov-on-Don. Soviet motion-picture director and screenwriter. Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1945.

Segel’ played the part of Robert Grant in the film Captain Grant’s Children (1936). In 1954 he graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, having studied in S. A. Gerasimov’s workshop. He presently works as a director at the Gorky Central Studio for Children’s and Young People’s Films. His most successful films include It Began Thus (1956; with L. A. Kulidzhanov), The House Where I Live (1957; with L. A. Kulidzhanov), and Farewell, Doves! (1961). He also directed the film The First Day of Peace (1959), the panoramic film The Volga Flows (1963), and the films Gray Disease (1966), Wake Up Mukhin (1968), Two Smiles (1970), and A Drop in the Ocean (1973). Segel’ is the author and coauthor of screenplays for a number of his own films, as well as for films directed by others. He has been awarded two orders and various medals.
