Seghers, Hercules Pietersz
(also Segers). Born 1589 or 1590 in Haarlem (?); died circa 1638 in the Hague (?). Dutch painter and etcher. Seghers studied under C. van Coninxloo in Amsterdam until 1606. His landscapes, which depict broad expanses of plains and forbidding mountains, are noted for their heroic force and subtle yet dramatic chiaroscuro effects. Seghers also executed etchings, including color etchings. His work influenced Rembrandt and J. van Ruisdael. REFERENCEHercules Seghers.
