Segrè, Emilio Gino 

Born Feb. 1, 1905, in Tivoli, near Rome. Italian physicist.

Segrè. graduated from the University of Rome in 1928. He was affiliated with the University of Rome from 1930 to 1936 and the University of Palermo from 1936 to 1938. In 1938, Segrè joined the research staff of the University of California at Berkeley; he became a professor there in 1946. Between 1943 and 1946 he was on the staff of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory.

From 1934 to 1936, Segrè was a member of a group headed by E. Fermi that investigated neutron-induced nuclear reactions. Segrè took part in the discovery of technetium in 1937, astatine in 1940, and plutonium in 1940–41. Together with O. Chamberlain and other workers, he succeeded in 1955 in producing antiprotons. Segrè is a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA and the National Academy of Lincei in Italy. He received a Nobel Prize in 1959.
