Seidl, Anton (1850–98) conductor; born in Budapest, Hungary. A protégé of Wagner, he conducted opera widely before coming to New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1885 to establish the Wagnerian repertoire. He also conducted the New York Philharmonic from 1891.
