Her 2002 autobiographical narrative, Dans l'Enfer des Tournantes ("In the Hell of Gang Rape"), explores the violence and drugs she endured during her childhood in the tough Paris suburb Seine-Saint-Denis, a heavily immigrant community. Mills's forte is contemporary ballets with classical technique, as evidenced by his winning a Rencontres Choregraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis prize in 1998--the only American to win that year and the first North American ballet choreographer to be honored by the Paris-based competition. In May of 1998, he was the only American choreographer chosen to present his work, Ashes, at the Rencontres Choregraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis in Paris, France. |
