Semester

in higher and specialized secondary educational institutions, half of an academic year.

A semester usually consists of 16 to 18 weeks of instruction. The scheduling of classes is coordinated with the semester, which generally concludes with an examination period. Vacations are scheduled between semesters, usually in January and February and in July and August. In many educational institutions of some foreign countries, for example, Great Britain and the USA, the school year is divided into trimesters, each ten to 12 weeks in length.
