Semevskii, Boris

Semevskii, Boris Nikolaevich 

Born Feb. 21 (Mar. 6), 1907, in the village of Verkhov’e, now in Smolensk Oblast; died Dec. 5, 1976, in Leningrad. Soviet economic geographer; doctor of geography (1949). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

Semevskii graduated from the department of economics of the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy in 1931. From 1959 he was professor and chairman of the subdepart-ment of economic geography at Leningrad University; in 1970 he became dean of the university’s department of geography.

Semevskii’s major works deal with the economic geography of foreign countries and with theoretical issues of economic geography. He was vice-president of the Geographical Society of the USSR from 1970.
