(physics)
A membrane which allows a solvent to pass through it, but not certain dissolved or colloidal substances.

Water passes through the semi-permeable membrane that will only allow clean water to flow through while trapping contaminants and not allowing them to pass through the membrane's filter.
This is not really a filtration mechanism in the truest sense of the words, as the semi-permeable membranes used in RO do not have pores.
Using a new twist on an old technology, the engineers are employing "forward osmosis," which exploits the natural diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane.
