Semikhatov, Aleksandr Nikolaevich 

Born Jan. 24 (Feb. 5), 1882, in Rtishchevo, in what is now Saratov Oblast; died May 29, 1956, in Moscow. Soviet hydrogeologist. Doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences (1937); Honored Scientist and Engineer of the RSFSR (1947).

After graduating from Moscow University in 1910, Semi-khatov taught at the Moscow Agricultural Institute (now the K. A. Timiriazev Moscow Agricultural Academy), where he became a professor in 1922. In 1914 he was one of the first in Russia to give a course in hydrogeology. In 1930 he became a professor at the Moscow Institute of Water Management Engineers. His principal works dealt with the geology and hydrogeology of a number of regions of the USSR. Semikhatov determined the hydrogeological zones of the USSR and compiled a map of the artesian and groundwaters of the European part of the USSR. He wrote the handbooks Underground Waters of the USSR (1934) and Hydrogeology (1954). Semikhatov was awarded the Order of Lenin.
