Pardubice (pär`dbĭtsĕ), Ger. Pardubitz, city (1991 pop. 94,636), N central Czech Republic, in Bohemia, on the Elbe River. Its chief economic activities are engineering, oil refining and sugar refining. The city has many notable Gothic and Renaissance buildings. Horse and motorcycle races are often held there.

Pardubice 

a city in Czechoslovakia, in East Bohemia, Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, on the Labe (Elbe) river. Population, 70,800 (1970).

Pardubice has machine-building enterprises that produce equipment for the agricultural and food-processing industries. It also has chemical, petroleum-refining, and food-processing industries, as well as a chemistry institute. The city was founded in the 13th century. It has been designated a historic preserve by the CSR government. Since the end of the 19th century, it has been the site of major international equestrian competitions, namely, the Great Pardubice Steeplechase.
