Sendai (sĕndī`), city (1990 pop. 928,138), capital of Miyagi prefecture, N Honshu, Japan, on Inshinomaki Bay. A major industrial and commercial city, it has industries that manufacture chemicals, metal goods, wooden dolls, and silk yarn. Long an educational center, Sendai is the seat of Tohoku Univ. and the Industrial Art Institute. In the 17th cent. the city was the stronghold of the powerful feudal lord Date Masamune. The Osaki Hachiman Shrine (built 1606) is there.

Sendai 

a city in Japan, located on the northeastern part of the island of Honshu. Capital of Miyagi Prefecture. Population, 545,000 (1973). A port and railroad junction, Sendai is one of the centers of the Tohoku economic region. Enterprises for refining oil, producing electrical energy, building machinery, and working wood are found on Sendai Bay. There are metallurgical, textile, and food industries. Coal is mined in the vicinity of the city. Sendai has a university.
