Sept-Îles

(or Seven Islands), a city in eastern Canada, in the province of Quebec; located on the southern coast of the Labrador peninsula. Population, 24,000 (1971). A port on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in the Atlantic Ocean, Sept-Îles has the second largest freight turnover in the country; in 1973 it handled 26 million tons of cargo. The city grew up in connection with the exploitation of iron-ore deposits in central Labrador: the ore is shipped to Sept-Îles by railroad.
