In southeastern TN, northwest of Chattanooga; organized Dec 9, 1857 from Hamilton County (and previously from Bledsoe, Marion, and Grundy counties). Name Origin: For the Sequatchie River, which runs through it; name is Cherokee, probably for 'hog river.'

Area (sq mi): 266.02 (land 265.85; water 0.18). Pop per sq mi: 47.70.
Pop 2005: 12,691. State rank: 82. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.60%; 1990-2000 28.30%. Pop 2000: 11,370 (White 98.00%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.80%; Asian 0.10%; Other 1.00%). Foreign born: 1.20%. Median age: 36.70.
Income 2000: per capita $16,468; median household $30,959; Pop below poverty level: 16.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,176-$21,039.
Unemployment 2004: 5.40%. Change from 2000: 0.40%. Median travel time to work: 27.70 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 50.40%.
