Location: Southern end of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in central California. Accessible by US 395; CA 155, 178, 180, and 190. Nearby cities/towns include Porterville and Bakersfield. Facilities: 7 rental cabins, 50 campgrounds, 12 group camps, dispersed camping, resort (concession operated), picnic sites, trails (1,000+ miles), marina, scenic drives, lookout tower, 9-hole golf course. Activities: Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, whitewater rafting, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country and downhill skiing. Special Features: 38 groves of giant sequoias, including Boole Tree, the largest tree on National Forest Service land and recognized as one of the largest trees in the world at 269 feet, with a diameter of 35 feet; Trail of a Hundred Giants; Wild and Scenic Rivers, including the North and South Forks of the Kern River and the King River; a 78-mile segment of Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (see entry in national trails section).
