Sequoia National Park, 402,510 acres (162,960 hectares), E central Calif.; est. 1890. In the park are 35 groves of giant sequoias, spectacular granite mountains, and deep canyons. The General Sherman Tree, 272 ft (83 m) high and 37 ft (11 m) in diameter at its widest point, is the largest and one of the oldest living things in the world, estimated to be more than 3,500 years old. Within the area are Mt. Whitney Whitney, Mount, peak, 14,494 ft (4,418 m) high, E Calif., in the Sierra Nevada at the eastern border of Sequoia National Park; the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states (Mt. McKinley , Alaska, is the highest peak in the United States).

Marble Falls drops 2,000 ft (610 m) in seven cascades. The park adjoins Kings Canyon National Park Kings Canyon National Park, 461,901 acres (187,070 hectares), E central California. Largely wilderness, the park features summits of the High Sierras and two enormous canyons on the Kings River.

Sequoia National Park

National park, Sierra Nevada range, California, U.S. The park, with an area of 629 sq mi (1,629 sq km), was set aside in 1890 to protect groves of big trees (Sequoiadendron giganteum) that are among the world's largest and oldest living things. The largest tree in the park is thought to be 2,300–2,700 years old. Kings Canyon National Park adjoins Sequoia park to the north; Mount Whitney is on the eastern boundary.
