On central eastern border of OK, west of Fort Smith, AR; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Cherokee lands. Name Origin: From the Sequoyah District of the Cherokee Nation, named for the Indian chief Sequoyah (c.1773-1843), who invented the Cherokee alphabet. He was also called George Guess.

Area (sq mi): 714.88 (land 673.82; water 41.06). Pop per sq mi: 60.70.
Pop 2005: 40,868. State rank: 22. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.90%; 1990-2000 15.20%. Pop 2000: 38,972 (White 67.40%; Black or African American 1.90%; Hispanic or Latino 2.00%; Asian 0.20%; Other 29.70%). Foreign born: 0.70%. Median age: 36.40.
Income 2000: per capita $13,405; median household $27,615; Pop below poverty level: 19.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,712-$19,977.
Unemployment 2004: 6.00%. Change from 2000: 0.70%. Median travel time to work: 27.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 44.00%.

The current status of Mesa's other properties is as follows: Coal Creek Project - Sequoyah County, Oklahoma - After the successful testing of the Cook #1 gas well (the well was tested on May 13, 2008, and flowed 900 thousand cubic feet per day on a 32/64ths choke), final construction was initiated on approximately three miles of pipeline which will connect the Cook #1 and future wells to an Arkansas Oklahoma Gas Company (AOG) sales line.
