Zinaida Serebriakova

Serebriakova, Zinaida Evgen’evna

Born Nov. 30 (Dec. 12), 1884, in the village of Neskuchnoe, in what is now Kursk Oblast; died Sept. 19, 1967, in Paris. Russian painter. Daughter of E. A. Lansere.

Serebriakova studied in St. Petersburg at the studio school of Princess M. K. Tenisheva (from 1902) and at the studio of O. E. Braz (1903–05). She was a member of the World of Art group (Mir Iskusstva). In 1924 she settled in Paris. Influenced by the 16th- and 17th-century Italian masters, Serebriakova sought to create ideally beautiful and harmonious images of women. Her handsome and thoughtfully executed works, which include portraits, nudes, and scenes of the Russian countryside, are characterized by balanced composition, precise and sensually modelled forms, and a terse style (In the Bathhouse, 1913, Russian Museum, Leningrad; The Harvest, 1915, Odessa Art Museum; Bleaching Linen, 1917, Tret’iakov Gallery; Collioure: Katia on the Terrace, 1930, Tret’iakov Gallery).

Unlike the now universally admired Russian painter Zinaida Serebriakova (1884-1967), who during her prolonged and arduous sojourn in Paris (from 1924 until her death) failed to establish herself solidly as an artist, Boznanska as a resident of that city won countless commissions, invitations to exhibit, and international accolades, including official recognition in the form of prizes, medals, and so forth during her lifetime.
Expertly played by Penelope Wilton, Sonya Serebriakova provides a brief respite of friendly companionship to Hurt's street-busking fiddler Andrey Prozorov.
Georgi Melitonovich Balanchivadze is also included, accompanied by a portrait by Zinaida Serebriakova that is unfamiliar.
