4. (formerly) a tenant by military service, not of knightly rank

Sergeant 

a military rank in the armed forces of the USSR and many other countries. In Russia the rank of sergeant dates from the 17th century in regiments formed on the West European model and in the Russian Army before 1798. In the USSR the ranks of junior sergeant, sergeant, and senior sergeant were introduced in 1940.

Unfortunately Johnson lost the best years of his career to the Second World War, when he served as an RAF sergeant instructor.
Stuart served his National Service in the Education Corps as a sergeant instructor and later spent 30 years as a civilian instructor at the Junior Leaders Regiment's unit at Gamecock Barracks, Bramcote.
From 1939 until 1946 he was a sergeant instructor in the Royal Artillery and was a veteran of Dunkirk.
