Sergeev, Vladimir Sergeevich

    0.01 sec.
Sergeev, Vladimir Sergeevich

Born June 16 (28), 1883; died Jan. 8, 1941, in Moscow. Soviet classical historian.

From 1934 to 1941, Sergeev was a professor in and chairman of the subdepartment of ancient history at Moscow State University and at the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History. From 1936 to 1941 he was also on the staff of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Sergeev wrote the first Soviet textbooks on ancient Greek and Roman history for universities and pedagogical institutes: Essays on the History of Ancient Rome (parts 1–2, 1938) and A History of Ancient Greece (1939). His investigation of Cretan-Mycenaean (Aegean) society revealed the society’s early slave-holding nature. Sergeev devoted much attention to the history of the Roman Empire. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1942).
