Frish, Sergei Eduardovich 

Born June 7 (19), 1899, in St. Petersburg, died Nov. 11, 1977, in Leningrad. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946).

Frish graduated from Petrograd University in 1921. He worked at the State Optics Institute from 1919 to 1939. Beginning in 1924 he also taught at Leningrad State University, where he became a professor in 1934. Frish’s main works deal with the systematization of atomic spectra, the study of the Zeeman effect and the hy-perfine structure of spectral lines, the determination of nuclear momenta, and gas-discharge and plasma spectroscopy. Frish proposed a method of spectral analysis of gases and invented several spectral devices. With A. V. Timoreva, he wrote a textbook for higher educational institutions, Course in General Physics (vol. 1, 10th ed., 1961; vol. 2, 8th ed., 1961; vol. 3, 6th ed., 1961). He was editor in chief of the journal Optika i spektroskopiia (Optics and Spectroscopy).

Frish was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
