Khromov, Sergei Petrovich
Born Aug. 22 (Sept. 9). 1904, in Bronnitsy, in what is now Moscow Oblast; died Apr. 29, 1977, in Moscow. Soviet meteorologist and climatologist. Professor (1938) and doctor of geographical sciences (1943). Honored scientific worker of the RSFSR (1975). Khromov graduated from Moscow State University in 1928. He was one of the organizers of the Weather Bureau of the USSR (now the Hydrometeorological Scientific Research Center of the USSR). From 1946 to 1953 he was head of the meteorological and climatological subdepartment at Leningrad State University, and from 1958 to 1973, at Moscow State University. His main works deal with synoptic climatology and meteorology, weather forecasting, atmospheric general circulation, and tropical meteorology. Together with L. I. Mamontova, he compiled (1955) the first Soviet meteorological dictionary. Khromov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals. WORKSVvedenie V sinopticheskii analiz, 2nd ed.
