Sergei Rytov

Rytov, Sergei Mikhailovich 

Born June 20 (July 3), 1908, in Kharkov. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968).

Rytov graduated from Moscow University in 1930. From 1934 to 1958 he worked at the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and since 1958 he has worked at the academy’s Institute of Radio Engineering. Since 1947 he has also been a professor at the Moscow Physicotechnical Institute.

Rytov’s main work has been devoted to the theory of vibrations and waves and to statistical radio physics and optics. He was one of the discoverers of the theory of thermal fluctuations in electrodynamics. He has been awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, three other orders, and several medals.
