Sergei Zhemchuzhnyi

Zhemchuzhnyi, Sergei Fedorovich 

Born June 24 (July 6), 1873, in Kerch’; died Sept. 27, 1929, in Leningrad. Soviet inorganic chemist and metallographer. Graduated from Moscow University (1895) and the St. Petersburg Mining Institute (1900). He was a student and close collaborator of N. S. Kurnakov, with whom he published a number of papers that formed the basis of physicochemical analysis.

Zhemchuzhnyi established the phase diagrams of many metal and salt systems, proposed an original method for studying the microstructures of salt alloys, discovered the plasticity of alloys based on manganese, and began the study of alloys with high electric resistance.
