Sergievskii, Maksim Vladimirovich 

Born Oct. 13 (25), 1892, in Moscow; died there June 20, 1946. Soviet philologist and Romanist. Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1945).

Sergievskii, who graduated from Moscow University in 1916, was a professor at Moscow State University from 1925 to 1946. He studied the origin, history, and problems of the grammar, dialectology, mixing, and contacts of the Romance languages, including the Romance literary languages. He was especially interested in the contacts between Slavic and Rumanian and between Slavic and Moldavian. He is the author of The History of the French Language (1938) and An Introduction to Romance Philology (1952). Sergievskii was a member of the Gypsy Lore Society of Great Britain. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
