a free balloon that, with a volume of up to 150 cu m, is designed to lift a person to an altitude of 100–150 m. The lifting force of the service balloon at the earth’s surface is equal to the weight of a person or, sometimes, slightly less. During the 1930’s service balloons were used to examine the envelopes of stratosphere balloons at their launch sites.
