Setton, Kenneth M. (1914– ) historian; born in New Bedford, Mass. Educated at Boston University (B.A. 1936) and Columbia University (M.A. 1938; Ph.D. 1941), he taught at the University of Manitoba (Canada) (1943–50) and Columbia (1950–65). Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1968) and one of America's most distinguished medievalists, his works include the five-volume A History of the Crusades (editor-in-chief, 1969–85); his four-volume The Papacy and the Levant, 1204–1571 (1976–84); and Western Hostility to Islam (1992).
