Sayyid 

(Arabic, “lord”), the honorary title of Muslims tracing their ancestry back to Muhammad or, among the Shiites, back to Ali. In Arabia of the early Middle Ages, a sayyid was the leader of a tribal alliance or tribe; in this sense, the term sometimes corresponds to “sheikh.”
