Name Origin: For John Shackelford (1790-1857), AL physician and legislator (1822-24) who fought for TX independence then returned to AL to practice medicine. Area (sq mi): 915.54 (land 913.95; water 1.59). Pop per sq mi: 3.50. Pop 2005: 3,167. State rank: 223. Pop change: 2000-20005 -4.10%; 1990-2000 -0.40%.
