shading coefficient [′shād·iŋ ‚kō·i‚fish·ənt]
(engineering) A ratio of the solar energy transmitted through a window to the incident solar energy; used to express the effectiveness of a shading device. shading coefficient The total amount of solar energy that passes through a glass relative to a ? inch (3 mm) thick clear glass under the same design conditions; includes both solar energy transmitted directly plus any absorbed solar energy subsequently re-radiated or convected into a room; lower values indicate better performance in reducing summer heat gain and therefore air-conditioning loads.
