shadow zone [′shad·ō ‚zōn]
(acoustics) A region, usually under water or in the atmosphere, which sound waves will not reach, according to ray acoustics. (geophysics) The zone, between 103 and 143° from the epicenter of an earthquake, in which direct seismic waves do not arrive because of refraction and absorption by the earth's core.
