Shagzhin, Tsyren 

(also Tsyrenzhap Shagzhin). Born 1918 in the ulus of Kharashibir’, in what is now Zaigraevo Raion, Buriat ASSR. Soviet Buriat playwright, actor, and stage director. People’s Artist of the Buriat ASSR (1953). Member of the CPSU from 1943.

Shagzhin graduated from the School of Music and Theater in Ulan-Ude in 1938. His plays include Cunning Budamshu (1956), which is based on Buriat folklore; The First Year (1956) and Conscience (1961), which deal with life in a Buriat kolkhoz; Song of Spring (1957); Flaming Hearts (Russian translation, 1967); The Oath (1969); and the comedy Devil in a Trunk (1963). He also wrote short stories. Some of Shagzhin’s works have been translated into languages of the peoples of the USSR.

Shagzhin has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and several medals.
