Shahrud 

a city in northern Iran, in the chief governorate of Semnan; situated in the southeastern foothills of the Elburz Mountains, on the highway and railroad linking Meshed and Tehran. Population, 32,000 (1975). Sugar is refined in Shahrud, which is the center of a viticultural and fruit-growing region. Chromite and coal are mined in the area.
