The little terror also endears herself to some of her sad new sisters, among them polar opposites Shakuntala (``Bandit Queen's'' Seema Biswas), who truly believes her life of quiet deprivation is God's will, and beautiful Kalyani (Canadian-born supermodel Lisa Ray), whom Madhumati hypocritically pimps out to wealthy Brahmins on the other side of the river. Upon her arrival at the ashram where she's probably going to spend the rest of her life (widows aren't permitted to remarry or socialize with the outside world), she meets the retiring Kalyani (Lisa Ray, one of the luminescent leads of Bollywood/Hollywood), the devout Shakuntala (Seema Biswas) and Madhumati (Manorma), the nasty, dictatorial woman who runs the house. She launched a family planning programme in 1946 with Shakuntala Paranjpe. |
