Shanhaiguan

Shanhaiguan or Shanhaikwan (both: shän-hī-gwän) [Chin.,=mountain sea door], city, NE Hebei prov., China, on the Bohai. Strategically situated where the Great Wall Great Wall of China, fortifications, c.1,500 mi (2,400 km) long, winding across N China from Gansu prov. to Hebei prov. on the Yellow Sea. The wall, running mostly along the southern edge of the Mongolian plain, was erected to protect China from northern nomads.

 meets the sea and on the narrow coastal route to Manchuria, it has been the site of many battles and the route of many invasions. It now lies on a double-track railroad linking Tianjin with Shenyang (Mukden). The city was known as Haiyang until 1949. Another name is Linyu.

Extending from the East at Shanhaiguan to the West at Lop Nur, the Great Wall of China has a total length of 6,700 km including all its branches.
LTD and then the 300,000 tons dock was built by Shanhaiguan Shipyard.
William Lindesay, a preservationist who walked 1,500 miles of far-flung wall in 1987--from Jiayuguan in the desert of Gansu province to Shanhaiguan in eastern Hebei province, where the Great Wall meets the Yellow Sea--called it a giant jigsaw puzzle.
