In south-central MO, east of Springfield; organized Jan 29, 1841 from Ripley County. Name Origin: For George F. "Peg-leg" Shannon (1785-1836), a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

On the southwestern border of SD, southeast of Rapid City; created Jan 11, 1875 (prior to statehood) from territorial county. Unorganized; attached to Fall River County for government purposes. County seat is in Fall River County. Name Origin: For Peter C. Shannon (1821-?), chief justice of the Dakota Territory Supreme Court (1873-82).
