Shapiro, Harry L. (Lionel) (1902–90) physical anthropologist; born in Boston, Mass. He served the American Museum of Natural History (1926–70), becoming curator and chairman of anthropology in 1942. He performed extensive research on the Pitcairn Islanders (1936), and originated the forensic system of anatomically identifying war dead (1946). |
