Sharjah (shärjä`), sheikhdom (1995 pop. 400,339), c.1,000 sq mi (2,590 sq km), part of the federation of seven United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates, federation of sheikhdoms (2005 est. pop. 2,563,000), c.30,000 sq mi (77,700 sq km), SE Arabia, on the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. ..... The modernized town of Sharjah (1995 pop. 320,095), on the Persian Gulf, is the third largest town in the federation, and has been developed especially as an art museum and cultural (rather than commercial) center. Oil has been produced in Sharjah since 1961. Formerly a British protectorate, Sharjah was the site of a British base until 1971, when the British withdrew from the Persian Gulf and Sharjah joined the United Arab Emirates. Its gulf port has long been important both strategically and commercially. |

In 1971 six emirates formerly under the control of the United Kingdom (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman and Fujairah) merged to create the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The airline is co-owned by Sharjah International Airport and the Sharjah CAA. Zayed University was founded in 1998 and joined the American University of Dubai and the American University of Sharjah in bringing American-style education--in English--to a generation of young people whose parents were unlikely to have finished high school. |
