Sharon, city, United States

Sharon (shâr`ən), city (1990 pop. 17,493), Mercer co., NW Pa., on the Shenango River, near the Ohio line; settled c.1800, inc. as a city 1920. An industrial city, its chief manufactures are textiles, foods, plastic and steel products, and electronic goods. The Shenango campus of Pennsylvania State Univ. is there. Shenango Dam and Reservoir (completed 1965) are nearby.

Sharon, plain, Israel

Sharon (shā`rən, shâr`ən), plain between the Samarian Hills of central Israel and the Mediterranean Sea, extending c.50 mi (80 km) from Jaffa to Caesarea, and mentioned several times in the Bible. See also rose of Sharon rose of Sharon, common name for several plants, especially Hibiscus syriacus, of the family Malvaceae (mallow family), and for St.-John's-wort, i.e., any species of the genus Hypericum of the family Hypericaceae (St.-John's-wort family).
