In N central CA, north of Chico; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Indian tribe of Hokan linguistic stock; the original meaning is uncertain. Also spelled Sasty, Sastise, Chasty, Chasta.

Area (sq mi): 3847.44 (land 3785.19; water 62.24). Pop per sq mi: 47.50.
Pop 2005: 179,904. State rank: 29. Pop change: 2000-20005 10.20%; 1990-2000 11.00%. Pop 2000: 163,256 (White 86.40%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 5.50%; Asian 1.90%; Other 8.10%). Foreign born: 4.00%. Median age: 38.90.
Income 2000: per capita $17,738; median household $34,335; Pop below poverty level: 15.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,443-$26,161.
Unemployment 2004: 7.40%. Change from 2000: 0.70%. Median travel time to work: 20.90 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 7.40%.
