Size: 2,100,000 acres.
Location: Northern California. Accessible by I-5; US 97; and CA 3, 36, 89, and 299. Nearby cities/towns include Callahan, Dunsmuir, Hayfork, McCloud, Mount Shasta, Redding, and Weaverville.
Facilities: 50+ campgrounds, group camps, boat-in camps, dispersed camps, cabin, lookout towers, picnic sites, trails (1,400 miles), marinas, boat ramps, winter sports areas, scenic drives.
Activities: Camping, hunting, swimming, fishing, boating, water-skiing, whitewater rafting, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, mountain climbing, interpretive programs.
Special Features: Mount Shasta, a 14,162-foot volcano; 32 alpine lakes; Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area (see entry in national parks section); 154 miles of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (see entry in national trails section). Forest includes four Wild and Scenic rivers.
