Also found in: Wikipedia, Hutchinson | 0.01 sec. |
Shatt al-ArabRiver, southeastern Iraq, formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It flows southeastward for 120 mi (193 km) and passes the Iraqi port of Al-Basrah and the Iranian port of Abadan before emptying into the Persian Gulf. With dredging, the river is navigable by shallow-draft oceangoing vessels. For about the last half of its course, the river forms the border between Iraq and Iran. In the 1980s it was the scene of prolonged fighting during the Iran-Iraq War. How to thank TFD for its existence? The ostensible reason for the war was to restore the Shatt al-Arab waterway, which Iraq had ceded to the shah during a period of weakness in 1965. He said an Iranian Revolutionary Guard maritime station at the mouth of the Shatt al-Arab waterway that separates Iran and Iraq appeared to be the ``gatekeeper'' for the illicit shipments. Iran wanted to finalize a timetable for implementing the remaining elements of resolution 598, claiming Iraq was raising new pre-conditions, including the "clearing" of the Shatt al-Arab waterway. |
