Shawinigan

Shawinigan (shəwĭn`ĭgŭn), city (1991 pop. 19,931), S Que., Canada, on the St. Maurice River. Just north are the falls of the St. Maurice, 150 ft (46 m) high, with a hydroelectric station supplying power for the city's pulp and paper mills and plants that produce aluminum, abrasives, chemicals, cellulose, and textiles. Most of the inhabitants speak French.
Shawinigan 

(until 1958, Shawinigan Falls), a city in Canada, on the St. Maurice River, in Quebec Province. Population, 27,500 (1971). A hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts is located at Shawinigan. In addition to an aluminum smelter and textile enterprises, the city has a chemical industry and a pulp and paper industry.
