shear plate shear plates, 2 1. One of the reinforcement plates added to the web of a steel beam to increase the web capacity to resist shearing loads. 2. A special round plate inserted in the face of a timber; used to develop shear resistance in a wood-to-metal or wood-to-wood joint; designed to provide greater load-carrying capacity in shear than can be achieved by a bolt alone.
