A wave that causes an element of an elastic medium to change its shape without changing its volume. Also known as rotational wave.

Shear waves can be hindered by as much as 30 percent.
The DSU3 428XL captures the full seismic wave -- both shear wave and P-wave -- enabling geological events to be captured that would be missed with conventional P-wave sensors.
Now, Jeannot Trampert of Utrecht University in the Netherlands and his colleagues report that they have observed shear waves passing through the inner core.
