On central eastern coast of WI, southeast of Lake Winnebago; organized Dec 7, 1836 (prior to statehood) from a territorial county. Name Origin: For the Sheboygan River, from an Algonquian word whose meaning is unclear: possibly either 'reed like,' 'something that pierces,' or 'thundering under the ground.'

Area (sq mi): 1270.97 (land 513.63; water 757.34). Pop per sq mi: 223.10.
Pop 2005: 114,610. State rank: 12. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.70%; 1990-2000 8.40%. Pop 2000: 112,646 (White 91.10%; Black or African American 1.10%; Hispanic or Latino 3.40%; Asian 3.30%; Other 3.00%). Foreign born: 4.30%. Median age: 36.80.
Income 2000: per capita $21,509; median household $46,237; Pop below poverty level: 5.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $28,814-$31,251.
Unemployment 2004: 4.40%. Change from 2000: 0.60%. Median travel time to work: 16.90 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 12.10%.
