Shehan, Lawrence

Shehan, Lawrence (Joseph) (1898–1984) Catholic prelate; born in Baltimore, Md. Ordained in 1922, he was made bishop of Bridgeport, Conn. (1953), and archbishop of Baltimore (1961), becoming a cardinal in 1965 and retiring in 1974. Known for his ecumenism and for liberal positions on social issues, he played a prominent role at the Second Vatican Council and energetically implemented its changes.
